The Stonewall riots also referred to as the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall rebellion were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay LGBT community [note 1] in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, , at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan , New York City. Patrons of the Stonewall, other Village lesbian and gay bars, and neighborhood street people fought back when the police became violent. The riots are widely considered to constitute one of the most important events leading to the gay liberation movement and the twentieth century fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Gay Americans in the s and s faced an anti-gay legal system. These influences, along with the progressive environment of Greenwich Village , served as catalysts for the Stonewall riots.

In use since the s, the term is an adaptation of the initialism LGB , which began to replace the term gay in reference to the broader LGBT community beginning in the mid-to-late s. It may refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non- cisgender , instead of exclusively to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Longer acronyms, with some being over twice as long as LGBT , have prompted criticism for their length, and the implication that the acronym refers to a single community is also controversial. The first widely used term, homosexual , now carries negative connotations in the United States. As lesbians forged more public identities, the phrase "gay and lesbian" became more common.
